Did you hear? Superhero’s are real! They’re called single moms.
Not having my father around made me acutely aware of all the things that dads are “supposed” to be; how a girl needs her father to be her first love, to show her strength, to teach her determination, how he teaches her of her own value. For a while, I let myself believe it was true- and I’d never have those things. Then I realized I wasn’t missing anything at all, my mom was pulling double duty.
You know what is inspiring? Watching my mom pick herself up, dust herself off, and create a life she loves. And she did it all by herself. You know what strength is? Raising three kids on your own, and doing it with grace. Determination is my mother getting home from work, opening up her laptop, and working her side hustle. I know my value because she tells me every day, and I can see I came from the strongest, kindest, wonderful woman I’ve ever known.
To my single mom on father’s day, thank you for everything. Everything you say, and everything you do. For all of your love, time, and dedication. It hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it is not under-appreciated. I am so lucky to have you. Who needs a dad with a mom like you?
Happy Father’s Day, Mama!
